Florida issues no state certificate to a sprinkler fitter who works for someone else. The state's certificate goes to the person or business that takes the job in its own name, the contractor you work for. You do not need a state certificate to start.

If you're starting with no experience, the usual path is getting hired. A certified sprinkler contractor hires you as a helper or an apprentice, and you get paid while you learn.

Two state credentials touch this work. The Contractor II certificate is the contractor class for sprinkler systems, and it matters later, if you ever take sprinkler work in your own name. The inspector permit goes to a contractor's employee whose job is inspecting installed systems, not fitting them.

The licenses, in detail

Florida's one permit for a worker is the inspector permit, and you need it only if inspecting installed systems is your job. Fitting pipe needs no state permit or certificate. The contractor certificate is the second entry.

Water-Based Fire Protection Inspector permit

This permit is for inspecting water-based fire protection systems. It goes to an employee of a certified contractor, whether that contractor holds a Contractor I or a Contractor II certificate. To get it, you show NICET Level II in inspecting and testing fire protection systems, or training the state accepts as equal. $100 to apply.

Two different things

The Contractor II certificate and the inspector permit are not the same thing. The certificate belongs to whoever takes sprinkler work in their own name. The permit belongs to an employee who inspects installed systems for a certified contractor.

The certificate for taking sprinkler work in your own name. Contractor II is the class of the certificate that covers sprinkler systems. The state requires 4 years of full-time employment by a licensed fire protection contractor. You have to be at least 18. $300 to apply.

Worth knowingThree routes lead in: the 4 years, a NICET Level III or IV certification in Automatic Sprinkler System Layout, or fewer years plus a degree. Your employing contractor verifies the years in a letter on company stationery, with your duties, the jobs you worked on and your dates. The NICET certification has to be current, and it counts instead of the years. The degrees the rule names are in engineering and fire science. NICET is the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies.

$300 is per class of certificate.

The federal wage survey groups sprinkler fitters with plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, so these figures cover that entire occupational group in Florida. The exam

Florida gives the Contractor II exam itself. The Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of State Fire Marshal administers it, at $100 per attempt, on top of the application fee. That $100 is per class of certificate, and a retake costs the same $100. The inspector permit has no state exam.
